Kay Brown Long

August 23, 1942 — February 20, 2022

Kay Brown Long, 79, passed away on Sunday, February 20, 2022.  She was born Kay Frances Lewis on August 23, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Frederick A. Lewis (birthplace Daggett, MI he worked as a Brakeman for the Chicago & NWestern RR) and Mabel A. Wilson (birthplace Chicago, IL she was a homemaker). 

Kay was raised in the Catholic faith and was a member of the United States Army from October 7, 1962 to March 27, 1965 at which time she received an Honorable Discharge holding the Rank of E-4.  She was a lifetime Member of the VFW and The American Legion.

The marriage of Kay F. Lewis and James L. Brown took place in Germany on January 9th, 1965. During their time together they opened their home to serve as Foster Parents to children in need of love and assistance.  They did this in addition to raising their own three children.

After Jim's passing on November 10th, 1994, Kay remained active with her clubs and community service.  Throughout her lifetime she held many, varied jobs outside of the home.  Kay was a founding Member of the Eagles Chapter in Orange Park, FL and past member of the Moose Lodge.

Kay found companionship with Nelson Burton through their mutual participation at the VFW. For many years they shared a committed relationship until his passing on August 14th, 2013.

The marriage of Kay Brown and Fred A. Long, Jr. took place in Orange Park, FL on August 23rd, 2014 at the VFW Post #5968.

When asked what she will be remembered for, her son's response was " She might make you mad by being stubborn and bullheaded, but you just couldn't help but love her".

Kay will also be remembered for her love of dancing; her excitement to travel and explore new experiences; her energy and her willingness to help others in need.  She may have been small in stature; however, her nature was fierce.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Frederick and Mabel; her 1st spouse, James Brown: her life partner, Nelson Burton; and her sisters, Linda Bearup and Donna Fredrick.

She is survived by her current spouse, Fred Long; her sister, Barbara Millonzi; her son, Robert James Brown; her daughters, Karen Daughtrey and Mary Lintalla; along with 8 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2:00pm to 3:00pm on Tuesday, March 1, 2022 in the Broadus-Raines Chapel.  Funeral services will follow at 3:00pm with Dr. Tim McDaniel officiating.
