Virginia Rose Hefferin, 87, of Green Cove Springs, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026.

Virginia was born on July 4, 1938, in Cairo, OH to Loel Judy and Evelyn Judy. She graduated from Clay High School in 1956 and later worked for the United States Department of Agriculture.

She shared a loving marriage with her husband, Jack Hefferin, and the two spent many happy years together. Virginia enjoyed gardening, tinkering around their property, and spending time with her beloved husband—often getting into things she probably shouldn’t have, much to the amusement of those who knew her.

Virginia was active in her community and volunteered with the Food Pantry of Green Cove Springs. She was also a proud member of the Red Hat Society.

She will be remembered as an amazing wife, mother, and grandmother. Virginia loved teaching her grandchildren to swim and was known for making sure everyone was well fed with her wonderful cooking. Family and friends will especially remember her honesty, her straightforward nature, and her unforgettable holiday meals—particularly her Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and the banana pudding that everyone looked forward to. She also did her very best to keep her husband out of trouble. Among her many memorable traits was her ability to “mow the grass in the pool,” a story that brought laughter to those who knew her well.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Hefferin; her parents, Loel and Evelyn Judy; and her sisters, Donna and Susan.

She is survived by her sister, Pam Ragusa; her daughters, Sheryl (Terry) Waughtel and Beverly (Johnny) Moody; her grandchildren, Monica (Brad) Santige, Erica (Nickolas) Jeter, Johnathan (Justine) Waughtel, Jackson Waughtel, and Jessica (Jasper) Carter; and her great-grandchildren, Josephine and Jacklyn Waughtel, Roscella Tomko, Lilian Jeter, and Kaden Moody, along with many extended family members and friends who will miss her dearly.

A funeral service will be held at Broadus-Raines Funeral Home on Monday, March 9, 2026, at 1:00 PM in the Broadus-Raines Chapel. The family will receive friends beginning one hour prior to the service at 12:00 PM. Burial will follow at Penney Farms Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations of goods, services, or monetary contributions be made in Virginia’s name to the Food Pantry of Green Cove Springs, 1107 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd., Green Cove Springs, FL 32043. Phone: (904) 284-0814.
