Thomas Dean
Johnson
June 30, 1925 — September 13, 2026
Green Cove Springs, Florida
Tom Johnson of Green Cove Springs, Florida passed away peacefully at age 101 on September 13th surrounded by loved ones. Tom was born in Rockford, Michigan and was the son of the late Lowell and Pauline (Hessler) Johnson. A natural athlete at Rockford High, he lettered in baseball and football. Upon graduation he joined the Navy and earned his wings. After 4 years, he continued flying for 8 years in the Naval Reserves. He graduated from Albion College with a business degree and was also a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He enjoyed a successful career at Ford Motor Company for 27 years.
Tom married Dona in 1954 and they had three daughters: first born Kimberly and then twins Lindsay and Liesa. Tom was the epitome of a family man. The girls think they are the luckiest souls on earth as he was an exceptional father and taught them many things from changing a car tire to having a strong vocabulary. New words to learn were printed on a 3 x 5 index card and taped to their mirror with the expectation they use it in conversation at dinner that night. He was a great listener and dinner together was a special time for the Johnson family.
Tom was an avid golfer (he shot his age at 81!) and snow skier; perfect for keeping active all year round. Reading was a “down-time” favorite. He logged, rated and critiqued each book. His favorite, Lonesome Dove, by Larry McMurtry, he read three times! He also had a special connection with animals. He had the touch and “whispered” many grand-dogs. One visit with Granddad and suddenly a new and improved pup appeared. This “whispering” talent worked with not only dogs but with horses, cats and a host of creatures both large and small. Tom loved the outdoors and instilled that same appreciation to his daughters. The family took many camping trips to National Parks across the U.S.A and special ski trips to the mountains. Other pastimes included fishing and motorcycle riding.
Tom will be remembered for his great smile, quick wit and kind heart by all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving children Kimberly Johnson, Lindsay Johnson (Brenda) and Liesa McDonald (Vernon) and granddaughter Hailey. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Dona W. Johnson, July, 2018.
