Susan Ellen Mitchell of Green Cove Springs, Florida passed away on August 28, 2026 at the age of 82. She was born in New York City, but grew up in Wantagh in the first large suburb development in the US called Levittown, out on Long Island. Often she would take the bus with her friends to Jones Beach, and sometimes all the way into the city for museums and movies.

As a young teenager, her father was transferred to Miami with Eastern Airlines. There she and her classmates were the first graduating class of Palmetto High School. In her sophomore year, she went to a Halloween party where she met her future husband, Frank. Their fondness for this holiday would stay with them for decades, creating memories for many with their epic costume parties.

After getting married, they moved near Cape Canaveral to work at the space program where Susan was a computer programmer, the only woman in her department. It was here she learned to play bridge, as no one was allowed to leave the property for lunch due to the secret work of the Apollo missions. After several more years and two children, she and Frank decided to join the family farming operation back in Miami.

There they made a home on the farm, worked hard, and invested their earnings into buying more groves which eventually allowed them to retire early to Magnolia Point.

Susan loved being part of volunteer organizations, often stepping up to lead, ensuring good was being done, and always striving for fun. She was a Girl Scout troop helper and softball mom, a leader in her local sorority, played tennis and golf, started the Magnolia Point Women’s Club, and loved playing cards, especially bridge and Samba.

She cherished her friends, had a soft spot for cats, and turned out to be a true adventurer when she sold everything and set off with her daughter in an Airstream at age 80.

She joins Frank at peace, but leaves behind two sisters, Vicki and Kathi; her two children, Jenn and Mitch/Frank II; their families including six grandchildren, Lindsey, Courtney, Jake/Frank III, Emily, Emma, and Willy; and one great-grandchild, Stella Marie.

There are no public celebrations planned, but in true adventurer fashion, Susan asked that her ashes be spread with Frank’s in three areas, from coast to coast. She asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to Community Hospice which provided loving care and support in her final months.
