Roger Dale Raines, known by family and friends as “Papa Roger,” died a peaceful death, surrounded by loved ones on May 14th, 2026 in Loves Park IL. Born as one of eight siblings in Nashville Tennessee on September 4th, 1950, Roger was a beacon of kindness, humor, faithfulness, and love. Dedicating his life to the Lord and serving those around him, Roger was a shining example of Christ to all who knew him.

Roger is survived by his beloved wife of nearly fifty-six years, Sharon Raines, his brother James (Ann) Raines, brother Mark (Scotty) Raines, sister Carolyn (Marty) Brooks, his son Michael (Allison) Raines, his daughter Rebecca (Gary) VenRooy, and a multitude of grandchildren and great grandchildren, to all of whom he provided endless smiles, laughs, and cherished memories.

Roger was a devout minister for twenty years, served the Deaf community as an ASL interpreter for forty-five years, and was an exemplary member in his community throughout his life. The core of his character was defined by an unwavering compassion. This compassion was not merely a passive trait, but the driving force behind his actions, compelling him to put the needs of others before his own and approach every circumstance with profound empathy and care. Roger was a helping hand to many, and his life was a wonderful illustration of what it means to be a minister, father, grandfather, and friend.

While he was lovingly known as “Papa” to his grandchildren, he was a Papa to many. His loving reach extended far beyond his home and blood relations. He was often regarded as “The life of the party,” with a humor, quick witted nature, silliness, and smile that could brighten up the darkest of times. Not only was his humor a primary characteristic that he gifted to all who knew him, but his singing voice was a joy to all who heard it. His legacy of humor and music continues to be cherished by his family and friends, and his legendary stories, quirky collections, and his love of trains and The Peanuts are forever remembered by those who knew and loved him.

Roger will be remembered as a radiant representation of steadfast love, compassion, and fun. Although he will be sorely missed by many, the memories he provided to all he touched are priceless. He was truly one of a kind, and those who knew him are sure to count themselves lucky. His legacy of love will continue for generations to come.
