Roger O. Long, born to Cecil R Long and Hilda E Long on September 18,1937 in Albany, New York, passed away peacefully in his home in Jacksonville, Florida on February 13, 2026.
Roger was predeceased in death by his parents, Cecil R. Long and Hilda E. Long and his only son, Jerome William Long. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Carol Marie Long and his daughters Vivian Lynn Neroni (Tony), Valerie Elaine Woodhall, Tula Irene Long (James) and Vanessa Nadine Nelson and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. All who love him dearly.
Roger joined the New York Army National Guard in 1954 while he was still attending school at Rush Henrietta Central High School, where he graduated in June 1957.
In 1958 he was released from the National Guard to join the United States Navy, where he was stationed on the U.S.S. Thor in 1959.
Roger’s journey continued as he was discharged from the Navy and joined the USN Reserves from 1962-1964. He then left the USN Reserve and returned to the Army National Guard. In 1976, he became a 1st Sergeant in the 172nd Signal Company New York Army National Guard.
Roger relocated to Florida in 1985, where he then transferred to the United States Air Force Reserve. In 1997 he retired as a Master Sergeant completing his career of 43 years of service to his country.
During his military career he was a member of the Rochester Protectives Volunteer Fire Department and active from 1970 through 1983. He received a special recognition award in January 2021 for 50 years of service.
Roger was a loving and caring man who would help anyone in need and will be remembered as a hero to all that had the privilege of knowing him.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, February 20th at 10:00AM at Jacksonville National Cemetery. Dr. Tim McDaniel will be officiating.
In remembrance of Roger O. Long, the family asks the any charitable donations be made to the American Lung Association in his name.
