Robert Gordon Weigel

May 5, 1937 — April 14, 2024

Robert Gordon Weigel, always known as Bob, age 86, passed away on April 14, 2024.  Born to Rev. Leonard & Louise Weigel on May 5, 1937 in Evansville, IN but spent his childhood in Ohio and then Taylor, MI where his father was minister of St. Paul United Church of Christ (formerly Evangelical and Reformed).  He was a graduate of Lowry High School in 1955 and attended Eastern Michigan College for 2 years.  He worked for Edw. C. Levy Co. in their testing lab then went to work for Wolverine Tractor & Equipment Co where he loved selling construction equipment. During this time, he served 6 years in the Air National Guard.

In 1961, he married Marilyn Unger, who he met at church, and together they built a family and a life filled with love and laughter.  Bob was a devoted father to Lori (Bruce) Gee and David (Meg) Weigel.  He was a proud grandfather to Kristin and Kyle Gee, Emma (Matt) Coyle, Sarah and Gwyn Weigel and was always happy to see his great-grandchildren Braylen, Brady and Sophie.  He is also survived by his special sister, Barb Schultz.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Bob was an outdoor enthusiast and loved to keep his cars clean.  After he retired in 1996, Bob and Marilyn hit the road full time in their motorhome.  While traveling the 48 states and Canada, they enjoyed hiking (especially the National Parks), visiting small towns and reuniting with family.  They worked some motorhome shows and also spent three summers working at Hearthside Grove Motorcoach Resort in Petoskey, MI.  They really enjoyed the Michigan summers up North.

In 2000, Bob and Marilyn purchased a lot at The Great Outdoors in Titusville FL where they spent 22 years.  They were members of Great Outdoors Church, located within the resort, where Bob was the Usher Co-Ordinator for several years.  His favorite job was to be a greeter at the front door.  He also spent several years washing and polishing motorhomes and only got his customers by word of mouth.

In 2022, after visiting several facilities, Bob and Marilyn decided on Penney Retirement Community as their next and final home.  They have never regretted their decision.  Bob became active in the Penney Train Club and the Friday morning men’s group and made many new special friends there.
