Lieutenant Commander, Retired, Richard James Klimas, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2026, aboard his sailboat, the Jolie Dancer—the place where he found some of his greatest happiness and where his love of the ocean was always at home.

Born on December 14, 1952, Rich grew up in Rockville Centre, New York. He was a graduate of Farmingdale, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and Officer Candidate School. He dedicated much of his life to serving his country, retiring honorably from the United States Navy and later from the Department of Defense. His many military honors included the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for Heroism and the National Defense Service Medal.

While his military accomplishments were remarkable, those who knew Rich will remember him for something even greater: his love for his family and friends. Rich shared his passion for sailing with countless people, welcoming family and friends aboard the Jolie Dancer and creating memories that will last a lifetime. He and his wife, Tricia, spent 29 wonderful years cruising together, exploring and sharing their adventures with the people who joined them.

For Rich, the ocean was more than a place to sail. It was his happy place and a reflection of the adventurous spirit that defined him. It seems only fitting that he spent his final moments aboard the boat he loved so dearly.

Rich is survived by his wife of 29 years, Tricia; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Ed and Donna Klimas and Paul and Hiedi Gunther; his sister and brother-in-law, Therese and Ed McLaughlin; his daughters, Kelli Cook, Kristin Klimas (Jimmy), and Jamie Murkerson (Jason); and his son, Travis Flannagan (Kayla) and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was a proud grandfather to Ava, Dylan, Christopher, Brody, Braden, Jaxson, Lauren, Megan, Kiley, Anslee, Travis Jr., and Lane. His family brought him great joy.

Rich was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Ruth Klimas Gunther; his father, Edward Kasper Klimas; and his stepfather, Fred Gunther.

A memorial service will be held at the National Cemetery in Jacksonville, and a celebration of Rich’s life will be held following the return of his granddaughter from her military deployment.

Fair winds and following seas, Rich. Your watch is over, but your journey continues in the hearts of all who loved you. The life you lived and the love you gave will never be forgotten. You will forever be loved and never far from the hearts of those who traveled through life alongside you.
