Paul Mason Skaggs, 91, of Fleming Island, Florida, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2026. Born on March 12, 1935, in Ansted, West Virginia, Paul was the 6th of 7 children of the late Emery and Madge Skaggs. Although he eventually made Florida his home, he never forgot his West Virginia roots. In 1955, Paul moved to Jacksonville to attend barber school, earning his barbers license and beginning what would become an extraordinary 70 year career. Through the decades he built lasting friendships, shared stories, and became a trusted mentor to countless barbers. His passion for the trade was passed down to his son, Mark, and later his grandson, Shaun, continuing a family legacy that meant so much to him. Paul and his beloved wife, Carol, settled in Fleming Island, where they enjoyed their retirement together until Carol’s passing in 2016. Though he deeply missed her, Paul remained in the home they shared for the next 10 years, accompanied by his faithful companion, Bugzee, who brought him comfort and joy. Paul had a passion for golf, classic cars, and good conversation. More than anything, however, he loved people. He had an incredible gift for making friends wherever he went. Whether meeting someone for the first time or reconnecting with an old friend, Paul had a way of making everyone feel welcome, valued, and like family. His greatest pride was the family he loved so deeply. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, who never hesitated to lend helping hand or offer words of encouragement. His kindness, generosity, and steady presence left an imprint on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Paul is survived by his daughters, Tamara Waterson and Misty Skaggs; his daughter-in-law, Angela Skaggs; five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren, all of whom will carry forward his love, wisdom, and countless memories they shared together. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carol Skaggs; his sons, Mark Skaggs and Tim Skaggs; and his parents, Emery and Madge Skaggs. While his family mourns his passing, they also celebrate a life exceptionally well lived; a life defined by hard work, compassion, laughter, enduring friendships, and an unwavering love for family. Paul’s legacy lives on not only through those he loved but also through the many lives he touched behind the barber’s chair over seven remarkable decades. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A memorial service will be held in the Broadus-Raines Chapel on Friday, July 17, 2026 at 11:00am with Pastor Christian Pope officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00am.
