Michael Christopher "Mike" Lekas, 68, of Jacksonville, FL, passed away on June 8, 2025, at Haven Hospice located in Orange Park, Florida.
Born on September 4, 1956, in Worcester, Massachusetts, Mike grew up in nearby Shrewsbury and graduated from Shrewsbury High School in 1975. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he found his calling working on jet engines. Serving from 1977 to 1981, Mike was stationed at NAS Jacksonville for his final duty post and achieved the rank of AD2. He took great pride in his work, knowing that his meticulous attention to detail contributed directly to the safety and success of naval aviation.
After completing his military service, Mike transitioned seamlessly into civilian life by continuing his work with jet engines at Fleet Readiness Center Southeast (FRCSE). Over nearly four decades of dedicated service there—culminating in his role as an E/E—he became known for his insistence on precision and doing things right the first time. His colleagues respected him not only for his technical expertise but also for the pride he took in every task. He retired from FRCSE in 2021 after almost 40 years of exemplary service.
Mike’s talents extended far beyond the workplace. A gifted craftsman who loved working with his hands, he built numerous pieces of furniture that remain cherished fixtures in the family home. His passion for cars was legendary among those who knew him—especially when it came to his beloved 1969 Camaro. Whether tuning its engine or polishing its chrome, Mike found joy and fulfillment under its hood. He enjoyed his time with the Clay County Cruzers. The friendships he made while with them were some of his best memories.
In recent years, one of Mike’s favorite pastimes was building projects for his family and friends. At the time of his passing, he was lovingly constructing a shelf unit for his grandson Jayden’s Lego collection—a testament to both his craftsmanship and devotion to family.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Bonnie (Willis) Lekas; daughters Keri (Lekas) Stewart and Kristina Lekas; son-in-law Zebbie Stewart; grandchildren Jayden and Magnolia'Rae Stewart; brother John Lekas; and many other family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, Christopher and Yolanda Lekas.
A man of quiet strength and enduring dedication, Mike leaves behind a legacy built not only through engines and woodwork but through love and commitment to those closest to him. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
