Mary Luretha Randolph Lengfellner Key (Oct 6, 1940 - April 8, 2026) passed away just after midnight, April 8, peacefully resting in her bed at MooseHaven in Orange Park, Florida, just across the St. John's River from her long-time home in Jacksonville. She was 85 years old.
Mary was born on October 6, 1940, near Cincinnati, Ohio, to Charles and Nettie Randolph.
She met and married Henry Lengfellner, her first husband, in Ohio, and gave birth to five children. She always said she loved being pregnant and having children. Even after four boys, she was happy to go through pregnancy again, in hopes of a girl and she won on her fifth try.
The family moved to Louisville, KY, while all the kids were still young. There, she made her family home in the Cherokee Triangle community. The first thing she did there was find a nearby church.
All Mary's kids were properly washed, dressed, and marched down the street to Highland Baptist Church every Sunday without fail. Her children were taught to never miss a Sunday service, sit up straight and never lapse in manners or etiquette in the house of the Lord.
The marriage ran its course and eventually, Mary and Henry divorced. And then, having spent nearly two decades as a happy homemaker raising five kids, Mary was thrust into the workforce to become the "super Mom" who did it all, working a full-time job while also managing a house full of growing children by herself.
After years of fighting the "good fight" of being a single mother (with all the challenges of loving her kids and affording to feed them at the same time), she met a handsome and accomplished businessman and decided to give love another chance.
She married her second husband, Russell Key, at her beloved church, Highland Baptist. By now, half of her children had left the house and the two youngest, Michael and Susan, went to Florida with Mary and Russell to begin a new mixed family with Russell's daughters, Stacey and Shelley, to live closer to Russell's new job.
Mary and Russell made a home in the Mandarin community of Jacksonville and soon joined Moose Lodge 2020. Both Mary and Russell donated many years of volunteer service to the Loyal Order of the Moose and served in several senior leadership positions.
She was married to Russell Key for 31 years before his passing in October 2012.
In her later years, Mary was a regimented attendee of the weekly BINGO games at her Moose Lodge. She could always be seen chatting with her friends, with one eye on her BINGO cards and one hand on her Diet Coke.
Eventually, life's journey caught up to Mary and in 2022, she moved into the MooseHaven retirement community, where skilled professionals could help to ensure she maintained the lifestyle she deserved but could no longer manage by herself. She loved it at MooseHaven and was a bigger-than-life figure there, until this week when she passed.
Mary is survived by four of her children: Steve (Linda) Lengfellner, Joseph (Susanti) Lengfellner, Michael Lengfellner and Susan (Patrick) Richards and one step daughter Shelley Key Kimmel; 9 grandchildren, Sarah (Michael) Carey, Bethany (Benjamin) Thomas, Rebecca (Lengfellner) Griffith, Wyatt (Bridgette Hennessy) Kimmel, Hannah Kimmel, Eric (Megan) Evans, Ryan Cannady, Aimy Richards and Elaina (Dustin) Nesom; 10 great-grandchildren, Emma, Charlie and Oliver Thomas, Ella and Kelsey Carey, Oscar Kimmel, Eamon, Evelyn and Eloise Evans and Derrick Cannady.
In addition to her husband Russell and her parents, Charles and Nettie Randolph, she was preceded in death by her second son, Kenneth Lengfellner, stepdaughter Stacey Key and brother Charles Randolph, Jr.
Nothing made her happier than visiting with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always loved hugs and holding them. A willing “mother” to the end, her open arms ever ready to hug the youngsters.
Mary's remains will be cremated. She will be remembered at a private family get-together later in the year.
In lieu of sending flowers, the family encourages a charitable donation to Mary's beloved MooseHaven.
