In Loving Memory of John “Skip” Aubrey Bogley
December 3, 1947 – June 3, 2025
John Aubrey Bogley, lovingly known to all as Skip, passed away early on June 3, 2025. A man of deep love, unwavering dedication, and quiet strength. Skip lived by the values that mattered most: family devotion, working hard, and passing along the lessons life had taught him.
Skip was born on December 3, 1947, to Samuel Walter Bogley, Jr. and Anna Cornelia Bogley in Mt. Rainier, MD. Growing up on the Chesapeake Bay with his big brother Sam, and all of his cousins, shaped him into a wonderful family man. He graduated from Bullis School for Boys in Potomac, MD and went on to Wesley College where he met his first love, Susan Hogeland of Feasterville, PA. Together, they built a beautiful family, raising three children and having six grandchildren. Susan remained the love of his life until her passing in 2004, and her memory remained ever present in his heart.
Skip’s professional life began quite literally with the ground beneath his feet—operating earth movers. His work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit led him to purchase and operate Neighborhood Amoco in Darnestown, Maryland, which he ran with care and integrity for 25+ years. He was the kind of man who never simply answered a question. Ask him for the time, and he’d show you how to build a clock. Whether it was how to fix a car, sharpen a tool, or solve a problem, Skip believed in teaching by doing—and in doing it right.
He found joy in the simplest things: the precision of target shooting, boating with the family, and building things from fences to decks, to entire back porches. His slalom skiing was the stuff of family legend—only he truly knew how to carve the perfect wake. His love for model trains started at an early age, and in retirement, he had a dedicated room where three trains could run simultaneously—and little hands could only operate them under strict supervision.
After Susan’s passing, it was clear Skip was never meant to walk alone. His eldest daughter encouraged him to go on a date with her mother-in-law, Harley (Susan thought Harley was wonderful, and the feeling was mutual). What began as a suggestion blossomed into love. Skip and Harley were married for 16 joyful years, filled with compassion, laughter, and of course a home by the water in Fleming Island, Florida.
Skip is survived by his daughters, Jennifer (Patrick Pitts) and Amy (Brandon Wooldridge); his loving wife, Harley, and her children, Christopher, Patrick, and Elizabeth; his grandchildren, Cameron, Hunter, Taylor, Carly, Connor, and Mason; step grandchildren, Philip, Faith, and Trinity; his sisters-in-law, Diane Hogeland and Rita Brady Bogley and sweet nieces and nephews. His is predeceased by his wife, Susan Bogley; son, Todd; and brother, Sam.
He leaves behind a legacy not just in the lessons he taught but, in the lives, he helped shape—with wisdom, humor, and heart. He will be missed beyond measure and loved always.
