John William "Jay" Oliverio

July 5, 1939 — June 3, 2023

John William (Jay) Oliverio from Green Cove Springs, Florida passed away on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at the age of 83.  Jay has been a resident of Clay County since 1974.  He was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia on July 5, 1939.  He leaves behind Thresa Ferris Oliverio, his wife of 62 years; two daughters, Terry (Steve) and Kathy (Gary), grandchildren, Lance (Bailey), Mackenzie and Megan Newman, sisters-in-law, Kathryn Kossuth and Roselie (Paul) Price, nieces, nephews and first cousins.  He is preceded in death by his father, Frank Samuel, his mother, Bessie Agnes and brothers, Frank and Robert.  

Jay graduated from Washington Irving High School in Clarksburg, West Virginia and then graduated from West Virginia Institute of Technology with a degree in Printing Management.  He was employed at Reynolds & Reynolds Company in Dayton, Ohio, first as a Purchasing Agent and then as a Salesman, selling business forms to car dealerships.  He retired after 39 years of service.

He was involved in many volunteer groups.  He was awarded the Golden Years Service Award for outstanding service in lifetime achievement in 2011. Some of his volunteering include at Sacred Heart Catholic Church: Parish Council, Eucharistic Minister, Finance and Building Committees, Outreach, Lifetime member of Knights of Columbus.  Others include: Clay County Habitat for Humanity, President and Board Member; Waste Not Want Not, Board Member; JP Hall Children’s Charity; Code Enforcement Board for Clay County and the City of Green Cove Springs; Clay County Elections, Deputy; Clay County Fair, Judge; Tomorrow’s Vision Committee, City of Green Cove Springs; Planning and Zoning Board, City of Green Cove Springs; St. Catherines Catholic Church as Parish Council member and Bazaar Chairman; The Players Golf Tournament; Legends Golf Tournament as Vice Chairman; The Ginn Golf Tournament as Vice Chairman; Super Bowl Committee for Jacksonville; and served on the  Magnolia Point Board of Governors and Architecture Review Board.  Jay was also a member of the Elks Lodge No. 1892 in Green Cove Springs, having received the Elks Distinguished Citizenship Award in 2013.

Jay and Thresa loved to travel, having been to all 50 states and extensive traveling through Europe and Asia.  Jay was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing golf with all his “golfing” friends at Magnolia Point.  They were long time season ticket holders for the Seminoles and Jaguars as he loved going to football games.

Jay was a kind and loving man.  He loved his family and friends.  Thanks to all the loved ones, nurses and doctors who supported him, especially VITAS Hospice over the past few years.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to JP Hall Children’s Charity, Waste Not Want Not or Outreach of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

A Rosary service will be held on Sunday evening, June 11 at 6:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 7190 US Highway 17S, Fleming Island, Florida. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, June 12 at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
