John Henry Mixson, 75, of Green Cove Springs, Florida passed away peacefully at his home on July 12, 2026, after a bout with cancer. He was a cherished husband, son, brother, father, grandfather and friend.
John was born on July 23, 1950, in Cummings, South Carolina to Ellis and Bernice Mixson. In the mid-1950s the family moved to Jacksonville, Florida where he went to John Love Elementary School, Kirby Smith Junior High school, and graduated from Andrew Jackson Senior High School in 1968. John obtained an AA from Florida State College, Jacksonville.
John worked for the Florida Air National Guard in various positions and retired as a Chief Master Sargent supervising the Vehicle Operations unit (motor pool) after more than 41 years of service in the Florida Air National Guard.
John enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, days at the lake (many at Kingsley Lake) and golfing. John was a member of the ELKS.
John married Diane Fay Hayes on 11/25/2000, in Orange Park, FL. John also was a devoted son to his mother Bernice Burgess, brother to Sara M. Dryden and Robert E. Mixson, a father to John H. Mixson Jr and Jeremy Kyle Mixson as well as stepfather to Caitlyn Hayes and Ryan Hayes.
John was preceded in death by his father Ellis E. Mixson.
John is survived by Diane Mixson, his wife of 25 years, Mother, Bernice Burgess, sister, Sara M. Dryden, and brother, Robert E. Mixson. He also leaves behind sons, John H Mixson Jr (Melissa) and Jeremy K. Mixson (Amanda), stepchildren, Caitlyn Hayes and Ryan Hayes, grandchildren and step grandchildren, Donovan, Garrett, Madeline, Cory, Hailey, Tristan and Antonia and many nieces and nephews.
John will be laid to rest at the Jacksonville National Cemetery on Friday, July 31, 2026, at 10:00 am, 4083 Lanie Road, Jacksonville, FL 32218. Please gather in Lane #3.
