Jack passed away March 2, 2022 in the Moosehaven Health Care Center at the age of 86.

He was born to Thomas and Mattie Bess Ely on June 22, 1935 in Pennington Gap, VA. Jack grew up with an older brother, Dewey Ely.

Jack attended Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee, majoring in Physical Education. He taught school for three years and was Principal of a two room school in his very first year of teaching. He also coached basketball and baseball.  During his third year of teaching, Jack moved to Ohio for better pay.  It was while in Ohio that he was called to serve in the United States Army from November 20, 1959 to June 24, 1960.

He worked at a lot of jobs, multiple line insurance adjuster and later a loan manager for a large financial corporation in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Jack then started his own business.  He was the owner of multiple mobile home parks, a lounge in Maderia Beach, a beach concession in Daytona and furniture store in Florence, South Carolina.

He enjoyed playing pool at a local senior center in Orange Park, Florida.  He was asked to play in the 8th Annual Senior Pool Championship in 2016.  Jack played a total of seven games and went undefeated.

Jack became affiliated with the Loyal Order of Moose on October 27, 1963 when he joined Crystal River, FL Lodge #2013. He was a Lifetime member and sponsored 4 members in his lifetime.

He came to Moosehaven on May 5, 2014 where he resided for almost

8 years.  While at Moosehaven he enjoyed playing pool in the NY Sports Complex, fishing from the 400’ pier, operating his metal detector around Jacksonville and taking cruises.

Jack is survived by his brother, Dewey Ely of Franklin, Ohio and nephew, Barry Ely of Cincinnati, Ohio.
