Frederick (Fred) Nelson Reed, Jr., 95, a longtime resident of Jacksonville, passed away on July 26, 2026, in the care of Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, surrounded by his family. Fred was born on October 22, 1930, in Atlanta, Georgia. His father, being an Attorney with the Federal Government, was relocated throughout the east coast for many years, with the family ultimately settling in Jacksonville. He used to love sharing with us over the years, that he went to over 26 different schools while growing up. He graduated from Clay High School, in Green Cove Springs, FL and later served in the U.S. Navy as a submariner onboard the USS Guavina. Fred met and married the love of his life, Martha, in 1955. They moved to Gainesville and Fred attended the University of Florida and graduated in the top of his class with a degree in Architecture in 1959, where he was initiated into the Honorary Gargoyle Fraternity. After graduating, he and Martha moved to St. Augustine,FL and Fred began practicing architecture with Craig Thorn. Fred later joined J. Brooks Haas, Architect, in Jacksonville and later became a General Partner. Haas & Reed Architects became a premier commercial architectural design firm representing municipalities, financial institutions, physicians, county, state, and federal governmental entities, and industrial clients. He also provided architectural and planning services for Grandfather Golf and Country Club, as well as portions of Sugar Mountain and Beach Mountain in North Carolina. Fred was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Martha Williams Reed; his sisters, Mary Ann Knabb and Barbara Tappan. He is survived by his son, Keith B. Reed (Gary Lockwood) and his daughter, Kimberly R. Cunningham (Spencer), along with many nieces and nephews. He loved the Great Smoky Mountains and enjoyed retirement there for many years with Martha. He was a staunch Gator and loved his college football. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling around the country in their RV for many years. Fred is interred next to his beloved wife, Martha, at Greenlawn Cemetery in Jacksonville.
