Donald C.
Harnish
November 9, 1949 – March 5, 2026
Donald C. Harnish, 76, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2026, leaving behind a life full of stories, service, laughter, and love. Born on November 9, 1949, in Chicago, Illinois, to Irene and Delbert Harnish, Don grew up with a deep sense of responsibility, curiosity, and a quiet determination that shaped everything he did.
Don’s life took him around the world—literally. He first served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, completing basic training at Fort Leonardwood, Missouri on August 1967, before spending a year with Company B, 8th Support Division, 196th Light Infantry Battalion in Vietnam. He finished his Army service at Fort Dix, New Jersey, in July 1969. A few years later, in April 1976, he began Naval training at Great Lakes, Illinois, launching what would become a 18‑year career in the U.S. Navy. He retired in June 1994 in Norfolk, Virginia, as a proud Chief Warrant Officer 2nd Class in Supply.
Even with all the places he travelled to and the responsibilities he carried, Don was happiest at the simplest moments. He loved fishing—anywhere, anytime—and could spend hours by the water, content with the quiet. He enjoyed Bingo nights, TV game shows, and swapping stories with anyone willing to listen. He had a way of making people feel at ease, often with a joke, a grin, or a perfectly timed comment that lit the room.
Don is survived by his wife, Teresita; his children Edward, Michael, and Sharon; and his grandchildren Isayah, Eli, Grace, Kace, and Bennie.
He is further survived by his life partner, Lucrecia Howell; her daughters Stephanie and Jennifer; her grandchildren Brittany, Jonathan, Anthony, Kylie, Ashley, and Justin; and seven great‑grandchildren who brought him endless joy.
Don’s siblings and in‑laws, Delbert and Lynne; Don Egan; Leonard; Barbara and Don Haepp; and Karen and Jim Conway—carry forward the family stories, memories, and laughter that shaped their lives together.
He preceded in death by his mother and father, Irene and Delbert; his brother, Bob; his sister, Shirley; and his loving daughter, Theresa.
Those who knew Don will remember his steady presence, his love of travel, his appreciation for a satisfying meal and good company, and the way he showed up for the people he cared about. He lived with a quiet strength, a generous heart, and a sense of humor that never faded.
A viewing to celebrate Don’s life will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, 6-8:00 PM at Broadus-Raines Funeral Home.
Funeral service will begin on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at 11:00 AM, at the same location; accompanied by Pastor Jim Joiner. Then proceed to Jacksonville National Cemetery for graveside service with full military honors at 2:00 PM.
Family and friends are invited to come as they are, share stories, and honor a man who lived fully, loved deeply, and left a legacy that will be felt for generations.
