Clayton L. (Mike) Berg, Jr. went to be with his Creator, his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on December 13, 2025 at Penney Farms, Florida. He was born February 16, 1928 in Drumright, OK to Clayton and Nannie Mae (Wood) Berg.
Mike grew up in San Luis Obispo, California and graduated from Westmont College (1950) in Santa Barbara. He received graduate degrees from Dallas Theological Seminary (1954) and Wheaton College Graduate School (1956) and was ordained to the holy ministry by a council of interdenominational churches in CA. Mike received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Eastern University, St Davids, PA (1977).
Mike married Jo Ann Schell in San Jose, CA (Dec 1950) and they were blessed with three children: Stephen, Catherine (Berg) Greig, and Joan (Berg) Yoder. He was an enthusiastic sports fan, but his favorite pastime was reading books.
Mike and Jo served for 60 years with the Latin America Mission. He served as professor of Christian education and dean at the Seminario Biblica, an international theological seminary in San Jose, Costa Rica; as president of Latin America Mission Publications, a Spanish language publishing house; and as president of the Latin America Mission. Mike authored books (a couple of textbooks and three books about Latin America) and wrote a series of commentaries on the life and works of Teresa de Avila, articles, editorials, and book reviews. He was a member of several Christian institution and seminary boards, and participated in meetings and conferences in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Mike and Jo were deeply grateful to the Lord for enabling them to add their “grain of sand” to the church in Latin America.
In his retirement Mike was actively involved in many activities at Penney Retirement Community where he was a resident since 1993 and contributed to several civic opportunities as mayor of the town of Penney Farms and as a Rotarian. For many years, Mike and Jo were active members of Grace Anglican Church in Fleming Island, FL.
Mike was predeceased by his wife, Jo Ann, his son, Stephen, and his son-in-law, Gary Greig; and is survived by his daughters, Catherine Berg Greig and Joan Berg Yoder (Ron); his four grandchildren—Kristen Yoder Strom (William), Jonathan Greig, Rivkah Greig, and Michael Yoder; and by his three great-grandchildren—Angus Strom, Duncan Strom, and Lydia Strom. Mike is also survived by his sister, Barbara Berg Olivas (Robert), and eleven nieces and nephews—Carrie Olivas Kuliev, Craig Olivas, Donald Schell, Nannette Schell Notor, Peter Schell, Melinda Schell, David Robinson, Carol Robinson Middleton, Paul Robinson (deceased), Martha Robinson Wood, and Jack Robinson.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, January 8, 2026 at Penney Memorial Cemetery, 3190 Florida 16 Penney Farms, FL 32043. Officiating will be Fr. B.E. Palmer, Grace Anglican Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Penney Retirement Community or Grace Anglican Church.
