Carl Alton Johnson
April 17, 1977 – August 26, 2025
Carl Alton Johnson, 48, of Fleming Island, Florida, passed away peacefully, and surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville, after a courageous 20-year battle with Common Variable Immune Deficiency.
Born on April 17, 1977, in Landstuhl, Germany, where his parents were stationed, Carl’s life was defined by a relentlessly positive outlook and devotion to the people he loved. Carl met his wife Stacy in November of their freshman year in 1995 and went on to become “Miami Mergers” when they married at Kumler Chapel in 2003. Carl graduated from Miami University in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science in Zoology and was a proud member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. After college, Carl went on to build a distinguished career in the steel manufacturing industry. He most recently served as Vice President of the Steel Tubular Division for Alliance Steel. Carl’s knowledge, hard work, leadership, and dedication to those around him earned him the respect of colleagues across two decades in the industry and will undoubtably leave a lasting mark.
While Carl found true enjoyment in his work, his greatest loves were his family. He was a devoted husband to Stacy (Larson) Johnson and proud, doting father of Ava, Mia, Ian, and Isa. He is also survived by his mother, Colleen Samson (Fleming Island, FL); father, Craig Johnson, and stepmother, Carol Johnson (Ocala, FL); brother, David Samson II, and brother-in-law, Christopher Smith (Charlotte, NC); sister-in-law, Jillian (Larson) Williams and her husband, Jason Williams (Fairfax, VA); mother- and father-in-law, Doug and Jody Larson (Orange Park, FL); step-siblings Erik Johnson (Ocala), Mark Samson (Connecticut), Greg Samson (Connecticut), Megan Samson (Michigan); and nieces and nephews Jones, Jett, and June Williams, and Jasper Samson. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, David Samson.
Carl lived his life with joy, humor, and an unwavering love of family. He had a quick wit, a gift for playful banter, and a way of bringing joy and humor into every moment. Carl loved to laugh, and he delighted in making others laugh too. As a husband, he never missed an opportunity to hold his wife close or tell her he loved her. As a father, he was unwaveringly present and a constant source of encouragement; proudly showing up for every game, match, meet, and school event—no matter the distance.
Carl never shied away from a challenge and took pride in his ability to solve problems with both determination and creativity. His dependable, warm, fun-loving presence created comfort and belonging wherever he went. We would also be remiss if we didn’t mention his love for all things sports - whether watching a Chelsea soccer match, playing a round of golf or tennis, or proudly rooting for the Ohio State Buckeyes. But above all, his greatest joy came from the simple moments with his wife and four children—the center of his world, and the legacy of love he leaves behind.
A celebration of Carl’s life will be held at Crossroad Lutheran Church (5101 Lakeshore Dr W, Fleming Island, FL 32003) on Friday, September 5, 2025. Visitation will begin at 3:30 p.m., followed by the service at 4:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Carl’s name to a memorial fund set up to support his children. (https://gofund.me/c258c41d)
