Arthur James Miles, Jr. June 2, 1949 – June 4, 2025

Arthur James Miles, Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and servant of Christ, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2025, in Penney Farms, Florida, just two days after his 76th birthday. He died after a long and courageous battle with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), a rare neurodegenerative disease that gradually took his physical strength but never touched his enduring spirit, unwavering faith, or constant humor. Arthur lived a life devoted to God, his family, and his calling.

Born in Miami, Florida, on June 2, 1949, Arthur was the son of Arthur James Miles, Sr. and Elma Thomas Miles, and was raised with a strong sense of purpose and service. From an early age, he displayed a natural intelligence, a love of music, and an ability to connect with others.

Arthur spent his professional career serving the students and families of Miami-Dade County. He held various leadership roles throughout his tenure, culminating in his position as Executive Director within Miami-Dade County Public Schools. He was widely respected not only for his keen mind and administrative skill but also for his personal integrity, steady leadership, and deep commitment to the people he served. He believed in the power of education to change lives and in the dignity of every individual.

Arthur’s life was guided by a deep and abiding Christian faith. As a committed member of the Presbyterian Church in America, he lived out his beliefs in both word and deed. He cherished theological discussion and delighted in exploring the mysteries of Scripture. A gifted communicator, he often led Bible studies and engaged in joyful debate with friends and family alike. His voice was a familiar sound in church choirs and family gatherings.

More than anything, Arthur loved his family. He was the devoted husband of Christine Miles, his beloved wife of 54 years. Together, they built a home filled with love, laughter, and the warmth of shared values. He was a proud and loving father to his daughters, Jennifer McCarthy (Kevin) and Kimberly Whiting (Michael). Arthur adored his grandchildren—Kevin, Gabrielle, and Madison McCarthy and Ethan and Lily Whiting—and took every opportunity to invest in their lives, celebrate their milestones, and share his stories, songs, and wisdom. He is also survived by his sister Sally Jean Jackson.

In keeping with his heart for service, Arthur had a lifelong commitment to helping children in need. He faithfully sponsored children through Compassion International and similar organizations, always keeping their pictures and letters close by. His affection for babies, especially, was well known—nothing made him light up more than holding a little one in his arms.

A man of great moral character, Arthur lived what he believed. He was honest, compassionate, and full of joy. He faced life’s trials with grace, and he celebrated its blessings with humility and gratitude. He leaves behind a legacy not only of professional accomplishment but of love lived out faithfully and generously.

A memorial service celebrating Arthur’s life will be held at Penney Memorial Church in Penney Farms, Florida, on June 24, 2025, at 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Arthur’s honor to Compassion International, World Vision International, or Heifer International—organizations close to his heart.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
